Elements of an Amazing Holiday Design: Holiday Design Trends of 2018

Design is always happening. It’s in a constant state of becoming, and designers are always on the lookout for what’s next to come. They study and survey past and present work and attempt to take it a step further, pushing boundaries and creating new and exciting formations. This rings true in any design-based industry, and holiday decor is no exception. The allure of the familiar holiday color classics like green, red, and white will always be holiday mainstays. But more avant garde and non-traditional designs have found their way into the public consciousness and create quite a buzz around the holidays.

In 2018, holiday decor continues to evolve. We see several designs building off of traditional styles while others seem to divert entirely from what’s already been done. This year’s trends see fresh colors and patterns emerging, new ornamental styles thriving, and designs imbued with personality, imagination, and vibrancy. New ideas are causing us to reconsider what we think of when we imagine holiday designs.

Creating designs with this level of complexity and creativity requires designers with deep understanding and broad knowledge of holiday design. They must also know when they can break the rules to bring new designs to life. This is what sets Ambius designers apart. Divine Magic

Imagination is the key ingredient and sets the stage for one of the most enchanting design trends of the year. Inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year, Ultraviolet, this trend taps into the visionary and ethereal pools of the imagination to elicit a feeling of awe, magic, and delight. With color palettes such as ‘Amethyst,’ ‘Ultraviolet,’ ‘Silver,’ and ‘Crystal,’ Divine Magic possesses otherworldly and dreamy qualities that conjure elements of creativity and delight in all who encounter it.

The Divine Magic design is unlike any design that has emerged in recent memory. It incorporates the whole pantheon of purples, shades of indigo and blue, bright and clear hues, crystalline elementals, and polished or burnished silvers.

Cold Metal

Winter comes in many forms, but we can all agree that it’s the coldest time of year. Inspired by frozen, icicle-laden landscapes in the heart of winter, frosted and brushed metallics take center stage in this design. Glimmers of gold, champagne, and lush, muted velvets compliment the frosted metal perfectly. This trend builds off of its metallic lineage infusing pale blues, soft turquoise, pewter and grays to achieve a contemporary holiday look inspired by the depths of winter’s beauty.

The design is rounded out with textures and natural elements such as frosted or velvet ornamentation. Shimmering pine cones, glossy foliage, and glistening icicles also make an appearance.

Rustic Winter

Inspired by picturesque hillside towns tucked away in the snowy highlands, this contemporary design is a natural progression from last year’s popular Plaid Mountains trend. The Rustic Winter design draws its influence from the days of horse-drawn sleighs dashing through the snow amongst farmhouses, barns, and wooded pine forests.

Characterized by its homestyle and handcrafted aesthetic, the color palette leans heavily on ‘True Red’ and the Benjamin Moore Color of the Year, ‘Caliente,’ as well as ‘Evergreen’ and Plaid or Flannel. The hallmarks of the design are its use of distressed or reclaimed woods, lots of tin, and cotton accents. Burlap, pine cones, and red berries provide the final touches and round out the design.

Winter Herb Garden

Earthy, organic, and glistening with frost, the Winter Herb Garden design incorporates a variety of natural influences such as soft Sage greens, grapevine, and Eucalyptus leaves. The design harmoniously balances the wonders of winter while exalting in the anticipation of spring.

Typically set upon White Pines, Norway Spruce, or Noble Firs, this design delights in its green-ness. It does so while incorporating organic elements such as light woods, wicker, and moss to truly inspire holiday magic. Accents of frosted leaves, icy branches, and snowflakes with silvery ornamentation and splashes of pewter create a meditative atmosphere that inspires visions of crisp, late-winter mornings as nature emerges from its hibernation.

Majestic Blues

Defined by a diversity of blues, the Majestic Blues design is a collection of rich and textured colors. From indigos and sapphires to baby and sky blues, touches of velvet and geometrically designed ornamentation are trend hallmarks. The design transcends its namesake, however, as it embraces its traditional holiday roots while blending in patriotic color essentials.

Working in conjunction with the blues palette, the design also incorporates symbolic accent colors. Berry reds, yellow golds, and neutral whites help create the classic American holiday dream design. When viewed in its totality, the design is a clear culmination of ideas and influences spanning our society and culture. It is a veritable merging of design philosophies gleaned from America’s past and present.
